About the Department

Hacettepe University's Department of Economics was founded in 1967 by Professor Osman Okyar, one of the leading scholars of economics science in Turkey. In 1982, the Department became a part of newly founded Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences.

There are four research subfields in the Department: Economic Policy, Economic Theory, Economic History, and Economic Development and International Economics. Faculty members publish articles in domestic and international journals and participate in domestic and international conferences and congresses. The share of articles published by the faculty members and indexed in the most respected citation index SSCI have considerably increased in the last 10 years. Some faculty members have been granted by the Scientific and Technological Council of Turkey (TÜBITAK) in some research projects.

The aim of the Bachelor's programs is to graduate qualified economists equipped with a wide perspective of social sciences and technical abilities for professional economic researches. The aim of the Master's programs is to provide students with the core of economic theory and research methods in advanced levels. Doctoral program aims to raise young scholars for universities.

The graduates of the Department are being employed both in private and in public sectors. In public sector, alumni have been employed in prestigious government institutions such as the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey, Turkish Treasury, Capital Markets Board, Ministry of the Economy, Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency, and the Secretariat General for EU Affairs. In the meantime, some graduates have preferred academic career.

The Department of Economics is an active participant of the Erasmus Program which aims to encourage and support academic mobility of higher education students and teachers in Europe.
